Hudson Celebrates National Salvation Army Week!

During his presidency in 1954, Dwight D. Eisenhower created National Salvation Army Week.In doing this he stated,

President Dwight D. Eisenhower

“Among Americans, The Salvation Army has long been a symbol of wholehearted dedication to the cause of brotherhood. In time of war, the men and women of this organization have brought to those serving their country far from home, friendliness and warm concern.  In the quieter days of peace, their work has been a constant reminder to us all that each of us is neighbor and kin to all Americans, giving freely of themselves, the men and women of The Salvation Army have won the respect of all."

The Salvation Army Celebrates 128 Years In The United States

In 1879 Lieutenant Eliza Shirley left England to join her parents, who had migrated to America earlier in search of work. She held meetings that were so successful that General William Booth sent Commissioner George Scott Railton and seven women officers to the United States in March of 1880 to formalize the effort.

Their initial street meeting was held on the dockside at Battery Park in New York City the day they arrived. In only three years, operations had expanded into California, Connecticut, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, Ohio and Pennsylvania. Family services, youth services, elderly services and disaster services are among the many programs offered in local communities throughout the United States, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, the Marshall Islands and Guam.

March 10, 2008 celebrates the 128th anniversary of George Scott Railton and the seven Hallelujah Lassies coming to America. Railton played an important role in the formation of The Salvation Army, and his “fingerprints” are found on many of the foundation stones of the organization. Railton and the seven Hallelujah Lassies made great progress for the ministry of The Salvation Army in the United States, and on this anniversary we remember their efforts and the progress they made for our organization.
